Musicians Who Have Went From A Band To Solo

Solo Musicians From Bands

Over the years there have been many musicians and singers who have went from a music career in a band to a solo music venture. There are a ton of these artists that have had successful careers but in the article I wanted to highlight some of my personal favourite ones.

Eric Clapton – His musical career started with several bands including The Derek and The Dominos, The Yardbirds and Cream. His first solo album was Self Titled and released in 1970. He is one of the greatest guitarists in the world and has seen major success in both his band and solo music career.

Darius Rucker – Throughout the 90’s and into early 2000’s it was hard for anyone not to at least know of the band, Hootie & The Blowfish with hits including Only Wanna Be With You and Hold My Hand. In 2001 Rucker released a solo R&B album. In 2008 he dove into the country music market as a solo artist. In 2013 Darius Rucker released a single ‘Wagon Wheel’ on his True Believers album. Some people know this song as it was written and recorded originally by Old Crow Medicine Show (a song they finished writing that Bob Dylan started to write in the 70’s).

Rob Thomas – In 1995 Matchbox Twenty was formed with Rob Thomas as the lead singer. In 1997-98 they had a number of top 40 hits including 3 Am, Push, Back To Good and Real World. In 1999 Thomas collaboarated with Santana on the song ‘Smooth’ which became a massive hit. Between 2005 and 2015 Rob Thomas released three solo albums.

Justin Timberlake – Originally a boy band member of N’Sync, now is one of the biggest names in pop music. There is no doubt that Justin Timberlake’s solo career has well surpassed the success (and they definitely had their super fans) with N’Sync. In 2002 he released his first solo¬† single ‘Like I Love You’. From this point on Timberlake has had ton of great albums and singles including Sexy Back, Can’t Stop The Feeling, Love Stoned, Mirrors, Rock Your Body, Suit & Tie amongst many others.

The Beatles – Combining this into one post as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison all went onto solo careers after the break up of The Beatles.

Let me know who your favourite solo artist who started out their musical career in a band is in the comments!
